We were presented with the initial “draft lease” in April 2015, and suffice to say it didn’t take long for several Whitehorse tennis clubs to voice their dissatisfaction with council’s draft lease.
An alliance of 8 Whitehorse Tennis Clubs was formed and together we achieved a more favorable and equitable outcome for all clubs. Many meetings were held and we enlisted support and advice from various politicians and local councilors. Whilst not entirely satisfied with various clauses of the lease, we did achieve some major positive outcomes with regard to security of tenure and the associated annual lease fees. Many thanks to our general committee members who represented the Club at the numerous meetings throughout the long process. Our whole committee attended most meetings (George Coster, Karen Drane, Wal Reddington, Muriel Paterson & Dom Alberico) and this ensured our club’s concerns were voiced quite clearly with councilors, council staff and their hired negotiators. Sincere thanks to Lynn Heath, President of North Box Hill Tennis Club, who convened the alliance of clubs and managed the flow of correspondence etc throughout the process. Several Whitehorse clubs have committed to meet as group in future to further negotiate with council with regard to developing a formal tennis facilities maintenance plan.
